How to transform a training with Ludiz

Corporate training is often seen as necessary but not always exciting. We all know how difficult it is to keep employees’ attention during long, theoretical, and downward-driven sessions, especially when it comes to technical or safety-related topics.

But what if we could rethink these moments to make them more interactive, more playful, and more engaging? This is exactly what we did with Biomérieux, an innovative company in the in vitro diagnostics field, which transformed its SSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) training with Ludiz.

The challenge: an essential but outdated training

Biomérieux wanted its SSE onboarding training, crucial for employee safety, to become more than just a formality. The challenge was to maintain employee engagement and actively involve them in their learning, while providing practical information they could easily apply to their daily tasks.

Like many companies, Biomérieux faced a classic challenge: How to make a safety training more dynamic and participatory, while staying true to its core message? It’s not just about delivering information, but ensuring employees retain and apply it.

The solution: a hybrid, playful, and interactive journey

This is where Ludiz comes in. In collaboration with Biomérieux’s team, we created a hybrid training that combined both digital elements (such as quizzes, videos, and interactive scenarios) and physical activities (such as role-playing games and hands-on practical exercises).
The goal? To create an engaging experience where theory meets practice in a fun way.

The idea was to turn each training module into a mission to complete, where Biomérieux employees became real-life safety specialists. Thanks to Ludiz, we integrated gamification elements such as levels to unlock, points to earn, and a leaderboard to fuel competition and cooperation — all in a time-limited setting to energize the teams and push them to take action!

Results: a successful transformation

The result?
Biomérieux’s employees didn’t just embrace this new approach—they showed a much stronger commitment than before. Engagement increased by 45% compared to a traditional training, and information retention was significantly better—the evaluation showed a retention rate of over 90% for key information by participants, compared to just 70% in classic training sessions.
More than just a training session, it was an adventure: each participant could progress at their own pace, earn points, and, most importantly, understand why the topics discussed are critical for their workplace safety.
Feedback was unanimous: employees found this approach more fun, more interactive, and, above all, more memorable. The ability to progress and unlock steps created a real learning dynamic.
This playful approach turned a potentially boring training into a motivating experience, where every challenge tackled increased participants' confidence and engagement.

The secrets to success: a science- and experience-based approach

So why did this method work?
First, gamification played a key role. According to studies on ludopedagogy, incorporating game elements into learning boosts participants’ emotional engagement, which directly impacts their memorization and understanding of the material. By creating a dynamic journey where the learner becomes the protagonist of their learning, we foster an immersive and long-lasting experience.

Furthermore, experiential learning, a core concept in learning sciences, was at the heart of our approach. Participants weren’t merely spectators of a presentation—they had the opportunity to experience real-life scenarios, solve actual problems, and immediately apply what they were learning.
This approach, combined with regular feedback and real-time tracking through the Ludiz platform, allowed us to tailor the training content to meet each participant’s specific needs.

Research on active and experiential learning supports this approach. Kolb (1984) in his "Cycle of Experiential Learning" shows that engagement in practical experiences, followed by reflection and real-world applications, leads to better knowledge retention. This theory applies perfectly to the hybrid approach we implemented with Biomérieux, where participants were engaged at every step of their learning process.

How to replicate this hybrid model?

If you’re a trainer, game designer, or educator and want to explore a hybrid approach to learning, here are some key takeaways from the Biomérieux experience. This method can be broken down into several steps:

  • Identify key learning objectives: Before designing your hybrid training journey, clarify the skills or knowledge you want participants to acquire. For Biomérieux, the goal was to ensure employees mastered safety procedures and retained key information. Make sure these objectives are measurable and aligned with the real needs of your learners.
  • Integrate playful, gamified elements: Use gamification to make learning more engaging. This includes elements like levels to unlock, challenges to complete, and rewards to earn (points, rankings). According to Deterding et al. (2011), gamification boosts engagement by adding competition and progression, motivating learners to invest more in the content.
  • Mix digital and physical elements: Create hybrid activities that combine digital elements (quizzes, interactive videos, simulations) with physical activities (role-playing, real-life scenarios, group discussions). This blend stimulates different types of intelligence and enhances learning. A study by Gee (2003) on learning through play shows that interactivity and immersion are crucial for maximizing the impact of learning.
  • Build realistic scenarios: As with Biomérieux, participants need to face realistic situations they can relate to. Role-playing games and real-life scenarios allow them to apply theoretical knowledge in a concrete setting, making the experience more effective.
  • Measure and adapt the journey in real-time: Use a platform like Ludiz to track participants’ progress in real-time. With data such as quiz scores or mission achievements, you can adjust the training journey and deliver content that meets each learner’s individual needs. This approach ensures that everyone progresses at their own pace while achieving the training objectives. A study by van der Meij et al. (2016) shows that personalized tracking greatly improves retention and understanding.
  • Gather feedback and adapt the journey: At the end of the training, collect feedback from participants to understand what worked and what could be improved. This allows you to refine the playful and pedagogical elements to make the next session even more effective.

Conclusion: rethinking learning is possible

This project shows that it’s entirely possible to transform a training into a playful and immersive experience, even in fields as serious as workplace safety. By using Ludiz, the company not only increased employee engagement but also ensured that learning would be durable and applicable in daily work.
This is a prime example of how technology and gamification can be used to reinvent traditional learning! By making the experience interactive and dynamic, any content can be transformed into a playful and pedagogical experience. And with Ludiz, this process becomes simple, flexible, and accessible!
